How does sleep therapy work at Neumo?
Sleep therapy starts by working together to identify your current sleep routine. The next step is to identify barriers to sleep and create an individualized plan to reach your sleep goals. Using sleep CBT, we will review current stressors and you will learn skills to be able to manage them so that they do not cause interruption during your sleep. A review of various lifetstyle factors will help to identify changes that may be effective to improve sleep. Over time, you will develop plans to help start new habits, such as increasing exercise or mindfulness practices (see our mindfulness blog), that have also been proven to be effective in improving sleep architecture. In short, we will take an expanded snapshot of your current lifestyle and work to increase research backed changes to promote a better quality and quantity of sleep.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What does good sleep look like after working with a sleep therapist?
This will vary from person to person, but on average, total sleep time with vary somewhere between seven and nine hours. When you are engaged in your healthiest sleep architecture, you will be able to wake up without the use of an alarm. You will feel rested and energized rather than worn out, groggy, and fatigued.
How long does it take to see results from sleep therapy?
Given consistent effort, practice of healthy sleep hygiene, and addressing any emotional and/or medical conditions that could interfere with sleep, it is reasonable to expect to shift sleep and wake times in 15 to 30 minute increments every four or five days.
Why can I not be able to sleep like I used to?
Like it or not, our sleep requirements, timing, and even cycles change as we age. As much as you might like to return to your adolescent glory years of deep sleep whenever and wherever, you may never be able to return to such times. However, this does not mean that all is lost. We can still work together to find the ideal habits to figure out what your body needs at this current stage of life.
What if there is something else causing my problems with sleep that you did not mention above?
While common sources of sleep disturbance are listed above, the fact remains that science of sleep is still evolving. That said, there is progress to be had even if we exhaust every avenue of sleep CBT in seeking a source of sleep disturbance. If we can rest assured that the issue is not in this realm, then we can develop a plan and support to engage other fields of exploration, such as medical and/or medication at that time to seek an answer.
